Refashion Runway Sewalong: Metallic

I found this awesome two piece prom dress (or costume…) for .99 cents, as always πŸ™‚

It’s too awesome for just one “before” shot!

I modeled this just before heading out to the gym. Though the material looks like glitter it is actually metallic floss thread, making it perfect for the RR challenge.

I used the skirt portion of the dress only. I removed the elastic waist and the lining (I hate linings!).

I had intended to use a pattern (*gasp!) to make this into a blouse, so I cut one of the seams out (to figure out how best to lay it out for cutting).

After I did that, I draped it over Minnie (my dressform) and I ended up taking a completely different direction…

I pinned the sides, cut off the excess, and serged the side seams.

I tried this on to make sure it fit and I really liked the look of it. Unfortunately, I was a little concerned about all the metallic… I mean, it’s pretty but it’s very flashy! I like to stand out/look nice/pretty/whatever but I also lean more towards the “classy” genre. This didn’t feel like something I would wear. Why refashion something you don’t plan to ever wear???

That’s when I decided to make it reversible. I had to hide the side seams by sewing a straight line with the wrong sides together to do that. So, basically, I did a poor man’s french seam πŸ™‚

The Janome 9400 went through this like a boss!

This is how it turned out.

The metallic doesn’t translate very well at all so just take my word for it when I say it’s LOUD. Luckily, I can wear the reverse though now, right πŸ˜‰

Paired with white leggings and flip flops, this is more my speed

It’s also the “mirror” image. Did you notice? Not only can I wear this metallic or black, I can wear it over my right or left shoulder.

See the pop of metallic at the neckline?

This is actually the look I had *intended* to make for my Asymmetric challenge in my season of RR last year… better late than never.

Which way do you like it better?

But wait! There’s MORE!

BECAUSE this looks like a lot of other refashions I’ve completed… I decided to play around with the drape some more. Guess what? I could fit my neck through the arm hole and wear it as a halter!

The sun would NOT cooperate with me during this shoot.

Too bad you can’t see the metallic underneath 😦 It’s quite lovely πŸ™‚
Peek-a-boo (the metallic, of course!)

Just like the off-shoulder look, I could also wear this in the reverse:

At least the sun finally came out for these pics.

Which way do you like the halter style better?

I like all 4 of these looks. My personal favorite would be #3 (Black halter). If ever my mood changes though, I’ve got 3 other options to choose from. Versatility is always a good thing.

I hope you’ve had a chance to vote for your favorite Contestant’s Metallic look for RR. You’ve got until midnight, so click here and vote if you haven’t already!

  1. Oh my goodness! I love how this turned out! My favorite is the black halter, and second is the black dress. I hope you get a perfect occasion to wear the purple though!

  2. Wow! What a great refashion! I like the purple dress the best, followed by the black dress…but the halter styles look great too πŸ™‚

  3. Love all three of these! My favourite kid of refashion – the one that leaves you with more options than you started with πŸ™‚ Fab job!!

    1. Haha! I agree, Linda. I had this in my stash forever, thinking it could only be reused for a Halloween Costume… This challenge is the only reason I chose it. I originally paired the off-shoulder black tunic with black leggings and my husband was the one who told me to pair it with white instead. I’d seriously be lost without his fashion sense πŸ™‚

  4. These are FABULOUS!! I love them all, but my favourites are the purple dress style with black leggings and the black halter with white leggings. Such a great piece!

    1. Clearly I was so excited I didn’t describe the second one correctly πŸ™‚ shd be black dress with white leggings
