Ahoy Pencil Skirt

So on my very last post I emphasized the fact I always buy new to clothe my bottom half…

Behold the garment that made me a liar!

I thought, “What the heck?” This only cost me $1. Why not give it a whirl? So I cut the striped bodice from the skirt, leaving the side zipper in tact.

Shortening the zipper to fit was actually pretty easy!

I pinned the newly raw edge down first…

Then I folded the zipper in to the new hem. I pinned it pretty good and cut the excess zipper off!

It’s actually no big whoop.

Sew that raw edge now, of course.

NEVER sew over your pins! ๐Ÿ™‚ …EVER.

Okay, so I have to rant just a little bit… I know that in my pictures I typically show my needle dangerously close to my pins. Rest assure I do NOT sew over my pins. This is just for the picture’s sake.

I don’t care how talented of a seamstress you are, you cannot miss the pin every single time. You just can’t. It’s impossible. Get over yourself ๐Ÿ™‚ You see them do it on Project Runway because those are industrial machinesย designed to be treated like crap by their users! ย I may not be the best seamstress (I’m actually pretty awful, still), but I DO know ABOUT machines. I’m employed full time in this capacity and just believe me when I say, Do NOT sew over your pins.

Rant over. For now.

My new skirt.. I’m so excited.

No, really. I actually think it turned out all right.

I don’t typically take my pictures so early in the day like this, but I had an early Mary Kay appointment (another reason for the skirt…). I wore this to my appointment and was quite comfortable in spite of myself.

The shirt was a garage sale reject gift from a friend.

The Dansko sandals were completely free per my sponsorship at the time.

You can still see the bruise on my ankle from my bike accident over a month ago…

Cocktail ring was a Mary Kay prize! Bracelet was a gift from Muffin. Sunglasses were a vacation splurge last November ๐Ÿ™‚

Fun Summer look for next to nothing! Can’t beat that ๐Ÿ™‚

Hope everyone’s summer is great so far!

  1. Summer..? What’s that? We have had the odd day, here and there… Still time, sunshine!!

Love this refashion, great job, as ever! Funny, I very rarely do ‘bottom half refashions’… I think it’s because I’m trying to ignore it, and focus on my ‘better’ half!! You’ve done a fab job of creating a classic – and I respect your advice re.sewing over pins… (*even though I am guilty of it, I’ll be making an extra special effort not to, from now on…) ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Haha. Thanks. Didn’t mean to rant (well, actually I did…) but it’s just so horrible on your machine. Even the slightest nick with needle/pin will throw off the timing and tension of your machine. Customers of mine will look at me like I have lobsters crawling out of my ears when I tell them not to do it. They think I’m just being contrary for the sake of being contrary or something… Drives me nuts! I’m trying to help!!! ๐Ÿ™‚
