Gathered shirt for UTC

Today continues in the What I Made for Vacation series.

IMG_3448I liked the print and it’s nice to have just a plain ol’ t-shirt, ya know? I don’t wanna be all “fancy” while I’m on vacation, if ya knowwhatimean.

I can’t deal with elastic around my wrist. Goodbye.

I know it sounds lame but I totally used the scrap elastic for hair ties. If you have long hair than you know the struggle is real! I go through hair ties like crazy. Now, I’ve got 2 free new ones šŸ™‚

Next, I wanted to tighten up the fit by taking it in a couple of inches. I decided to get a little creative by rouching the sides. I did this on a Serger, using my favorite gathering technique. Gather, if you don’t know, is synonymous with “pucker” in sewing.

Set your left and right needle tensions (leave looper tensions on a normal setting) to 9 for super duper pucker!
Set your stitch length to its max... on Sergers that's typically a 4.

Sergers cut the fabric as they sew the stitch… so, I could take in the shirt and rouch, gather, pucker, whatever the edges all at the same time. Yah, for fewer steps šŸ™‚ #Lazy.

With sergers there’s no way to lock the stitch. You’re left with a tail of thread and just have to deal with it…

No big whoop. Just trim the tail… and fold the raw sleeve edge under twice to cover it.

P.S. I turned my needle tensions back to normal when I serged the sleeves. I only wanted pucker on the side seams.

Stitch it down with a straight stitch.

IMG_3471That took a few steps and pics for me to explain… but this was a really easy refash, folks šŸ™‚

IMG_3596That fit is much better!

And check out that gathered side detail:

IMG_3598This tshirt was perfectly casual and comfortable for an evening of shopping at the new Mega “UTC” shopping center in Sarasota.

Even in Florida I can’t escape “Frozen”

This attraction was actually kind of cool…no pun intended. I still haven’t seen the movie yet. I know a couple of nieces that will be more than happy to help me with that šŸ™‚

Imagine “Let it Go” on non-stop loop… ALL day…

This attraction was neat but UTC itself was even more impressive… I swear this place is its own city! If you’re ever in the area I highly recommend checking it out.
